Cleanville’s 10-Step Rug Cleaning Process:

1. Pre-Inspection, Photo Documentation and Consultation

Whether we pick up your rugs or they are delivered “cash & carry” to Cleanville, our initial inspection serves to determine each specific rug type and any inherent characteristics that could potentially affect the cleaning process. Every rug is photo documented on the front, back and sides. If we are concerned about the safety of a rug or maintaining its condition, a rug cleaner will contact you to discuss recommendations and establish an approved plan for treatment.

2. 24-Hour Dye & Color Fastness Test

Since most fine rugs are made of wool or silk, dye migration or bleeding is always a concern. As necessary, we perform a prolonged colorfastness test to determine the most safe and effective best cleaning method for each rug.

3. Dry Soil Removal

Rugs are carefully pre-vacuumed with a Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI)-approved commercial vacuum to remove surface hair, dander, lint and other insoluble dry soil. After the initial vacuum, rugs are dusted to remove the dry particle soils that cut the rug’s delicate fibers and cause premature wear.  We use a variety of dusting techniques to remove dry soil, including gently beating the rug with a specialized machine allows soils to sift downward and out of the pile.

Following dusting, the rug’s face is vacuumed once again.

4. Pre-Treatment

Potentially difficult spots are stains are pre-treated with special solutions and the entire rug is pre-conditioned so that soils may be thoroughly dissolved and emulsified. To protect natural fibers, all Cleanville cleaning agents have been approved by the WoolSafe Organization.

5. Submersion Wash & Agitation; Rinse, Flush Extraction

Depending on the fiber content, delicacy and colorfastness of each item, rugs are washed on a range from minimum moisture to complete submersion cleaning. Sturdier rugs are gently agitated with a soft bristle machine to loosen stubborn soils and stains.

Depending on the rug type, soils are thoroughly rinsed with cold water and extraction equipment or flushed with a specialized wand in a rug bath. Following a thorough rinse, 90 – 95% of the water within the rug is removed by hand using a gentle extraction tool.

6. Drying

After extraction, rugs are dried flat on our specialty drying platform or hung on a rug tower in a climate controlled environment. (Inadequate or incomplete drying or wet cleaning on-location could cause prolonged drying, texture change, cellulosic browning, dye migration, mold growth, dimensional change, and/or dry rot.)

7. Fringe Cleaning

Some rugs require supplementary fringe cleaning or correction to help restore the original color. We employ special procedures and solutions, and never use chlorine bleach which causes degradation and permanent damage to the foundation fiber.

8. Grooming

Dry rugs are groomed with a specialty soft-bristle brush in the direction of the pile. A final vacuum removes loose fibers and dry soil that may have surfaced during the drying process.

9. Fabric Protection

To help rug fibers resist particle soiling and stains an application of fabric protection can be applied.Optional Rug Cleaning Service; additional charge of $.95 per foot.

10. Post Inspection and Delivery

A certified rug cleaner will give the rug a final inspection and release it for pick-up or delivery. Rugs are carefully wrapped with non-stick plastic tape or twine for ease in handling.

If rugs are to be stored we offer Tyvek® wrap which allows rugs to “breathe” while protecting against moisture, dust and insects. For short term storage we offer acid free Kraft paper wrapping. Additional charge for Tyvek & Kraft wrapping.
