You have probably heard the terms Scotch Guard, Stain Guard, Protector, or MicroSeal before... but what exactly do these products do? First of all; not all carpets and rugs are created equal! There are several different fiber types that rugs and carpets are constructed with, and they all behave differently when it comes to stain resistance and cleaning. To put it simply, most synthetic carpet (especially nylon) comes with a form of stain guard from the mill it is produced in. That protector is applied to the fibers and baked on. However, after 2-4 years of traffic wear and cleaning, etc, the stain guard coating wears off and does not offer the same protection as when it was new. Wool and other natural fibers, on the other hand, generally do not come with any sort of added protection! That means you have a textile, whether it is carpet, upholstery, or a rug that has no protection against spills, spots, food, or pets! This is where Cleanville comes in to protect your investments! We offer fiber stain guard application on just about any type of textile you have - wall to wall carpet, oriental & area rugs, upholstery, and more. We have several different stain guard products available to use, depending on the fiber it is going on. One MAJOR benefit of the product we use is that it contains what is called acid-dye blockers. Why do you need acid-dye blockers? Well, almost every substance that is going to permanently stain your textiles is acidic! Drinks, pet urine, vomit, and many other harmful substances are acids that easily and permanently dye your vulnerable fibers. The acid-dye blockers in the protector we use fill empty dye sites [...]

A question we get asked ALL the time is "How often should I clean my carpet?" Lucky for you guys, today I am going to discuss what the best answer is to that question! First of all, the short answer is... It depends! What does that mean? Well, it depends on where you live, how many people live in your house, how many pets you have, how often you have guests, whether or not everyone takes their shoes off, if you eat on your carpet, how often you vacuum, and what kind of carpet you have - and more! The answers to those questions determine how often you should clean your carpets because all of those factors contribute to adding more dirt and soiling to your carpet. The number of people in the home greatly increases the amount of soiling because each person tracks in dirt and sheds millions of skin cells per day! The same goes for having guests over, and especially when they do not remove their shoes. Besides people, pets are one of the largest contributors to adding soiling to your carpets. They do not wipe their feet when they come in from the muddy outdoors, they drool, they shed, they rub their oily hair all over the carpet, and can sometimes have accidents on the carpets. In summary, the more people or pets you have in your home, the more often you need to vacuum and have your carpets professionally cleaned. Now that we discussed the cause of the soiling, we can discuss how to remove it and how often. A common misconception about carpet cleaning is that it makes your carpet resoil faster, or causes it to wear out faster. [...]

It’s time for some spring cleaning, and there’s no better place to start than with your carpet. If you’ve got an area rug somewhere in your home, we’d like to show you how you can clean it yourself, and get a little bit of that nice feeling that comes from freshly shampooed carpets. While regular vacuuming is recommended to keep your rug clean and allergen free, you should only have to deep clean your rug every 12 to 18 months. Here are the first 4 steps to a clean rug and a cleaner home. 1. Vacuum and Prepare the Rug Start by removing all of the loose dirt and dust from your carpet. Vacuum it on both sides to prepare it for washing. Move the rug outside or to another area where you’ll be able to wash and rinse it without damaging nearby flooring. 2. Mix Your Cleaning Agent and Test It Whether you choose a professional carpet shampoo from the store or a simple mixture made with a mild household cleaning agent and cold water, always test it on a small piece of carpet before proceeding. Check for color fading and bleeding on your spot test. If it comes out without any negative side effects, it’s time to clean the carpet. 3. Scrub Using a soft brush or a firm sponge, scrub the cleaning agent deep into your carpet until you work it into a lather. Allow the rug to soak like this for a few minutes before rinsing. 4. Rinse Rinse the carpet thoroughly with a hose until the water runs clear. You’re not done yet! Make sure to check out 7 Steps to a Clean Rug: Part 2 of [...]
