Sandy is the sixth-largest city in Utah, with a population of 95,836. It achieved incorporation in 1893 in an effort on Mormon settlers’ part to clean up the area. After its incorporation, the mining-based town lost its transient passersby and instead became home to families, businesses, farmers, and churches. By 1900, Sandy only had a handful of saloons and hotels left. Its incorporation helped it become one of the most popular towns in Utah.
Sandy saw a second boom decades later, in the late 1960s. At this time, the rural town got such an influx of people that neighborhoods cropped up in all directions from Main and Center streets. In the ’70s, Sandy became a collection of family-oriented small communities – an identity it still has today, on top of being a thriving commercial center.
In 2014, Sandy city officials announced a plan to redevelop the downtown area, adding high-rise residential buildings, office towers, multi-use trails, a new Hale Center Theater, and other amenities. The plans also include renovations to the Shops at South Town shopping mall. The redevelopment project (called “The Cairns”) has a projected completion date of 2025.
