West Jordan, Utah, is part of Salt Lake County. It’s a suburb of Salt Lake City, with a population of 113,699 as of the last census (the fourth most populous city in the state). Nestled at an elevation of 4,330 feet, West Jordan is in the southwest end of Salt Lake Valley. Named after the Jordan River, this city sits between the river’s west bank and the Oquirrh Mountains.

Mormon settlers named the city of West Jordan in 1847. By 1950, settlers built some of the first sawmills and houses in the area. Residents today can still see these historic structures in the city’s Gardner Village shopping district. Early in the city’s days, mills, mining, and agriculture were the area’s biggest economic enterprises.

The Kennecott Copper Mine is in the Oquirrh Mountains – the world’s largest manmade excavation. Other notable places in West Jordan, Utah, include four major retail centers, Salt Lake Community College, and the South Valley Regional Airport. West Jordan is currently in a state of transition as city planners turn old downtown into “Briarwood,” a transit-oriented development that will include a park, history museum, senior center, courthouse, and indoor recreation facility.
